Analysis of Band-Genre Research

I have moved onto researching bands that shar the same genre as my magazine. By doing this I gain a sense of the mise-en-scene of fashion within emo/metal/grunge social groups. I also will research there website so i can see what things are popular on there that could fit onto my magazine. Finally I am going to analyse the bands album artwork so I can gain an understanding of what makes an effective peice of work stands out and how it effectivley has a meaning to it. The three bands I will be researching are A Day To Remember, Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria, I have chosen these three as they are well known metal bands who are popular and share the same themes yet contrast and stand out in there own way.

Analysis of double spread articles in magazines for my chosen genre:metal/rock

Following the research of front pages and contents pages with my genre of metal/rock i have moved onto analysing double spread articles following the same genre. The magazines I have incoorpporated into this to research are nme,kerrang and  Rock Sound. I have annotated three double spread page articles of metal rock magazines, in order for my article to look professional. I was knew to analysing double spread articles as during the preliminary task we only had to analyse contents pages and front pages however I had analysed the form of 3 articles which helped when analysing them again.Through analysing three articles I have come across the common codes and conventions needed to make my magazine cater to particular social groups(emo, gothic, grunge) through mode of adress,image, colour and layout. With this research that I have currently just conducted I feel as though I am capable of creating an double spread page for a metal/rock magazine as the codes and conventions are clear.

After conducting this research through analysis of the codes and convention of magazine articles of my chosen genre of metal/rock it is visibly clear that in order for my contents page to effectivley reflect the genre to an audience it needs: to look professional, stand out, reflect genre, be dominating and dark.Therefore I need to stick to the following in my final souble spread page articles: Aswell as having an article, include another fun element to the page such as 'top 10 favourite song' or a 'fact file.' It is effective is the article is set out as an interview as you can use different colours for questions and answers and makes it more personal as you can state the persons actions and tone of voice. Stick to a colour scheme that contrasts and reflect the genre or effectivley make it match the image. The images dont just have to be colourful they can be black and white as this creates a passionate look to the images. Finally the background to the page can just be a fill colour that represents the genre or it could be a setting which would also match the genre of metal/rock for example, a graveyard. It is vitally important that I incorporate these codes and conventions as they relfect a metal/rock genre therefore people will know if its to there preferred reading and it will imediatley cater to those in the same social groups that these band would be associated with.

Analysis of contents page of magazines for my chosen genre:metal/rock

Following the research of front pages with my genre of metal/rock i have moved onto analysing contents pages with the same genre. The magazines I have incoorpporated into this to research are kerran, Rock Sound and hammer. Two of which I have already analysed for my front covers however I like the layout and style to the front covers so i wanted to explore the rest of it to see if it continueed to please me as that is the main aim of a magazine. I have annotated three contents pages of metal rock magazines to obtain a greater knowledge of what is needed for the genre to be clear and effective. Through analysing three contents pages I have discovered the common codes and conventions needed to make my magazine cater to particular social groups(emo, gothic, grunge) through text, images etc.  I intend tomake my magazine intimidating, loud, contrasting with colours, eye catching and proffessional looking.  The age group is clearly 15-30s as this music would be too overpowering in sound and language for the younger generations and similarly with the older yet it would not be the type of music they have had previous experience with. With this research that I have currently just conducted I feel as though I am capable of creating a contents page for a metal/rock magazine as the codes and conventions are clear as they are very similar to the front pages which I have analysed alot of through form, genre and my prelim task.

After conducting this research through analysis of the codes and convention of magazine contents pages of my chosen genre of metal/rock it is visibly clear that in order for my contents page to effectivley reflect the genre to an audience it needs: to look professional, be very 'in your face', intimidating, harsh and dark.Therefore I need to stick to the following in my final contents page: Stick to a colour scheme that stands out and contrasts however effectivley keep it consistent with the front page colour scheme. The use of a drop cap is effective as it dominates the rest of the copy like the music is dominating in sound. An editors message is very common throughout all genre of magazines as it gives the editor some lime light not just the bands and it also helps to praise the issue and give the reader an insight into the issue. Mise-en-scene is very important on the key image it is the most vital part of the contents page that informs the reader of the genre therefore my images need to have long hair, contain action, tattoos and piercings as they reflect metal/rock.  Finally It is effective if there are plugs that engage the audience such as 'top 20 2010 hits' these make the magazine fun and plugs can be scattered around the page filling up blank space effectivley in shapes or graphics to make it more appealing.It is fundimentally important that  I incorporate these codes and conventions  as they relfect a metal/rock genre therefore people will know if its to there preferred reading and it will imeidatly cater to those in the same social groups that these band would be associated with.

Analysis of front covers of magazines for my chosen genre:metal/rock

Previously I have studied and analysed the form of magazine front covers, contents pages and double page sprerad articles. Through this research I have gained a clearer knowledge on how my magazine should be layed out and what vital codes and conventins are neded. Following this research I have now began to research my chosen genre within magazines. My chosen genre is metal rock therefore I have researched magazines that cater to this theme such as kerrang, the big cheese and rock sound, these are three wel known and established metal rock magazines. I have annotated three front covers of metal rock magazines to gain a greater knowledge of what is need for the genre to be clear. Through analysing three front covers I have discovered the common codes and conventions of the front cover page of a metal/rock magazine that are vital to create an effective, eye catching, loud, rocky, scary and proffessional looking front cover. The clear social group for this magazine is gothic/emo/rocky people and those interested in rock/metal music however hopefully it will engage those who dont generally listen to this genre of music. The age group is clearly 15+ as swear words are used on some of these front covers and the look of them may be too overpowering for the younger generation. With this research that I have currently just conducted I feel as though I am capable of creating a front cover for a metal/rock magazine as the codes and conventions are clear and i am fimiliar with them as I read these magazines on a weekly basis.

After conducting this research through analysis of the codes and convention of magazine frotn covers of my chosen genre of metal/rock  it is visibly clear that in order for my front cover to effectivley reflect the genre very clearly to an audience, to look professional, be eye catching and clearly cater to the chsoen social group (gothic/emo/rocky) I need to stick to the following in my final Front Cover: There eneds to be a clear key image that is the main focus point of the front cocver within this key image the mise-en-scene needs to reflect the genre of metal/rock(tattoos, long hair, piercings, serious faces.) It is effective if there are plugs that make the engage the audience such as 'top 20 songs of the year,' gaze theory is commonly used and has appeared to be effective as an attractive iconic figure would attract an audience. The use of colour schemes make the page look attractive and creates consistency(use colours that are bright with a black outline as these mix of colours refletc genre:loud and dark) and finally the masthead needs to be unique and act as the trademarked font for the magazine so whenever they see that particular typeface people will immediatley think of  my magazine.  If I incorporate these codes and conventions needed to relfect metal/rock genre on a magazine front page then I will create a presentable, 'in your face', rocky professional front covercover that will be successful and be according to the veiwers prefered reading. 

Analysis of the codes and conventions on the form of a double spread article in a magazine

I have studied and analysed three double spread paged articles found in magazines, one which was themed on real life, another having the theme of music and finaly one based on film. Through analysing three articles I have discovered the common codes and conventions of the form for a double spread article page of a magazine that are vital to create a spatial, engaging, lumionus, interesting and proffessional looking article.Hopefully it  will cater to either a particular age, sex or the persons preffered reading, so that it would be a determined success and gain an income. I have outaken this task in researching double spread article pages so that I can incorporate certain elements i analysed to my own final product of a music magazine. Previously in my preliminary task I studied and analysed contents pages and front covers magazines based mainly on school, this helped me gain a greater understanding of the form of the contents pages and frontcovers. However this is the first time I have ever had to analyse a double spread article page, but I found it just as easy as the front covers and contents pages as they generally contained the same codes and conventions but just a few more so you can differentiate a contents page to an article. With this research that I have currently just conducted and along with the research that I have completed during the preliminary task, I feel as though I am capable of creating a double spread article for a magazine as the forms are clear and similar to front  pages which I have a very great knowledge of. Therefore if i follow the codes and conventions of the form, I should be capable of creating an attractive, entertaining and professional article.

After conducting this research through analysis of the form of magazine double spread articles  it is crystal clear that in order for my article to look professional, cater to a majority of people, be engaging and fascinating then I need to stick to the following when producing my final double spread article: Incorporate a a quote that sits in the middle of the main body of text as it will catch the audiences attention if it is in larger font and a more luminous colour compared to the text by doing so it will hopefuly make the audience want to know more of the story. The use of colour schemes are very important, it helps if the colour scheme is consistant throughtout the whole of the magazine this being the front age and the contentspage too. When chosing my colour scheme i can have colours that completley clash or that completley work well together it doesnt matter however through analysis it came to my attention that it is effective if the colour scheme matches the colours within the images. The layout of my article is going to be an interveiw, however an introductory text will be used followed by questions which will be in a different font colour to stand out, by asking questions it makes the article more personal to the reader as its as if their favourite band is answering the questions everyone clearly wants to know and just for you, helps to connect with the magazine. Lastly I will make sure that the furniture,the background, be it an image or fill colour, it needs to be fairly simple so that text can be visibly clear and doesnt make the page too chaotic with too many colours. If I incorporate these codes and conventions of the form of a double spread article in a magazine then I will create a presentable and professional article that will be successful and be according to the veiwers prefered reading. 

Analysis of the codes and conventions on the form of a contents page magazine

 have studied and analysed three Contents Pages of magazines, two of which were fashion magazines and one being a sports themed magazine. Through analysing three Contents pages I have discovered the common codes and conventions of a contents page of a magazine that are needed to create a proffessional, presentable, clear navigation and attractive contents page that would be acceptable to be sold in a shop. I have presented this research to  ge a greater understanding of the codes and conventions fot he form of a magazine so that I can apply these elements to the product that I will be producing, a music magazine. Previously in my preliminary task I studied and analysed contents pages of fashion and music magazines just like the following ones, however I have not incorporated these as they follow almost the exact codes and conventions. However by analysing these previously it has helped me understand that each magazine follows some form of template so that the form is recognisable and stands out.  With this research that I have currently just completed, along with the research that I have conducted during the preliminary task, I feel as though I have broadened my knowledge of the form of a contents page and now have a greater understanding of the codes and conventions of a contents page of a magazine and will be certain to add them to my final peice in order to make it as successful as the professional ones.

After conducting this research through analysis of the form of magazine contents pages it is visibly clear that in order for my contents page to look professional, be eye catching and connect with the well with the audience, I need to stick to the following in my final Contents Page: Preferably shape the text into an 'L' as this helps to keep text neatly wrapped around the image together yet still spread out, it also brings shaping into my final peice which looks attractive. Use a large key image that will stand out and act as the highlight story of the magazine, picture needs to be eyecatching but preferably make sure the background of the image is simple so the attention is focused on the key image as it is the focus point. However just because there is a key image doesnt mean that other smaller images can be used, shape the images into circles, squares etc to make the page fun and reflect the target audience.  Along with this I need to keep to a set margin so when the pages are put together, the text is still visible for the reader, although it is used for that purpose it will also help to keep all of the coverlines, subheadings and lures in line. Effectivley the words contents don't have to be used as it is a dull masthead, try and be unique by either saying 'in this issue off...' or 'this month in...' as this shows versatility within mastheads. Lastly whenever the name of the magazine is stated keep to the trademarked font as it will remind the reader of what they're reading and helps to plublicise the magazine so whenever they see that font on anything they will immediatley think of your magazine.  If I incorporate these codes and conventions of the form of a contents page in a magazine then I will create a presentable and professional contents page that will be successful and be according to the veiwers prefered reading. 

Analysis of the codes and conventions on the form of a front page magazine

I have studied and analysed four front covers of magazines, two of which weee film magazines, one being school and the other a general magazine. Through analysing three front covers I have discovered the common codes and conventions of a front cover of a magazine that are needed to create a proffessional, clear, effective and attractive peice of work. I have done this research so that I can apply these codes and conventions to the product that I will be producing, in this case a music magazine. Previously in my preliminary task I studied and analyses front covers of school magazines just like the following ones, it was clear to me how helpful that was in order to create my preliminary front cover therefore by using that knowledge i have once again done the same. One of the following front coers is found on my preliminary task as I had analysed it before however using more knowledge that i have gained, I have added to it. By using a school magazine it helps to compare and contrast the codes and conventions depending on the theme of each magazine. With this research that I have currently just completed, along with the research that I had conducted during the prelim task, I feel as though now I fully understand the codes and conventions of a front cover of a magazine and will be able to apply them to my front cover.

After conducting this research through analysis of the form of magazine front covers it has come to my attention that in order to have an affective, attractive, proffesional looking magazine I need to stick to the following in my final front cover: Use a large key image so that it is the main focus however make sure it is an intresting picture so it engages the audience and make sure that there facial expressions represent their character. Along with this I need to keep to a set margin in order to make my coverlines and lures in line with eachother, this makes the page look less messy, crreating a neat and clear look to it however it also means that once I have bent the page back after reading it then the text would steal be in good condition making it presentable. Use a Colour scheme as it creates consistency and makes the front cover more fun, it is effective if the cover line is in one colour and the lure in another , creating a cannon effect on my front cover. And lastly avoid having any blank spaces but don't put pointless things in the dead spaces as sometimes less is more. If I stick to these codes and conventions of the form of a magazine then I will create a presentable and professional front cover that will immediatley attract the audiences attention.
